Lawn grasses – a chapter of their own
The beginnings of turf grass breeding
1956
Turfgrass breeding begins in Bremen in 1956 at the Norddeutsche Futtergesellschaft NFG, which, like DSV, had been founded in 1925 by Prof. Freckmann and Prof. Weber. In 1965, DSV and NFG merge to form "Deutsche Saatveredelung Lippstadt - Bremen GmbH, zu Lippstadt".
In addition to forage plant varieties, NFG had already begun to initiate broad turfgrass breeding, which produced the first variety approvals just in the period after the merger, expanding the company's economic base in the then expanding turfgrass market.
Further influence on turfgrass breeding came from the long collaboration with Dutch breeder Zelder B.V.. A company that had been active in turfgrass breeding for many decades. In 2003, Hunsballe Frø and DSV each took over 50% of the Dutch company Zelder B.V. and continued grass breeding through EuroGrass Breeding GmbH & Co. KG. In 2013, DSV takes over the shares of Hunsballe Frø and thus all EuroGrass ventures become DSV subsidiaries.
Today, DSV's central breeding station for turfgrasses is Asendorf near Bremen. In addition, turfgrasses are processed in France at the Les Rosiers site.
